Week 3 Homework Notes and Videos
NOTE 1: ALL TRAINING SHOULD BE DONE WITH TRAINING COLLAR AND TRAINING LEASH ON.
NOTE 2: DO NOT LEAVE TRAINING COLLAR OR TRAINING SLIP LEAD ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY TRAINING YOUR DOG.
NOTE 3: BE SURE TO HOLD THE LEASH CORRECTLY.
NOTE 4: EVERYTHING THIS WEEK SHOULD BE DONE IN LOW AND EASY DISTRACTION, UNLESS IT IS TOO VERY EASY. IN THAT CASE, YOU CAN SLIGHTLY INCREASE THE DISTRACTION FOR SIT ON THE DOG FOR INSTANCE.
NOTE 5: THE GOALS ARE PLACES TO WORK TO IN THE FUTURE. IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE GOAL, DON'T WORRY AS LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE WORK TOWARDS THE GOAL. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN CALL OR EMAIL ME WITH ANY TRAINING PROBLEMS THAT COME UP IN BETWEEN LESSONS.
NOTE 6: IF YOU DON'T GET THROUGH ALL THE EXERCISES IN ONE DAY, YOU CAN JUST BE SURE THAT THE EXERCISES YOU DID NOT GET TO ARE DONE THE NEXT DAY. THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE, I THINK, IS THE MOLDED SITS. HOWEVER, THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER TO START TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR.
NOTE 7: WHEN YOUR DOG WORKS WITH YOU AT HOME, YOU MAY NEED TO GO DOWN IN TIME AND THEN BUILD BACK UP TO WHERE YOUR DOG WAS TRAINING WITH ME (IF YOU ARE IN PACK LEARNING AND BOARD & TRAIN). THE DOG WILL WORK BETTER FOR WHOEVER THEY WERE LAST WORKING WITH, SO OFTEN THE TIME NEEDS TO BE BUILT UP BY THE OWNER TO HAVE THE SAME SORT OF WORKING RELATIONSHIP.
NOTE 8: TRAINING CAN BE DONE IN SEPARATE SESSIONS. I LIKE TO KEEP MY SESSIONS AT 15 MINUTES IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE DAY (EXCEPT FOR LONG PLACE OR SIT ON THE DOG). OTHERWISE, YOU CAN BURN YOUR DOG OR PUPPY OUT.
NOTE 9: MARKER WORDS ARE GOOD=GOOD JOB KEEP GOING YES=GOOD JOB YOU ARE RELEASED FROM THE EXERCISE AND NO=THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR.
NOTE 10: BLUE TEXT GOES TO THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE EXERCISES. [IT IS A LINK]
Homework Schedule:
Calming Exercises (You can rotate these on opposite days):
- Sit on the Dog 30 + minutes Goal: To get your dog to lay down on their own steam in five minutes or under. Week 3: You can find more distractions to do this in (your yard, different rooms, outside, and if ready a quiet park or bench away from the action. A great distraction would be to do this while the contractors are working on your home.
- Long Place 30 minutes Goal: To get your dog comfortable and more relaxed staying on their place for five minutes. Week 3 Change: Drop the leash and be sure to do the 30 minutes. You do not have to reset or anything like that if she gets off. People can walk around, but I would not try this with strangers walking around her.
- Adult Dog Relax for Exam 15 minutes Goal and Directions: Seated or standing exam name each part of the body before you touch a part of the body. You can also give her a food reward for allowing you to touch that part of the body right after. (They have these things called licky matts that could be useful while doing this. You put peanut butter or something in it and it keeps them distracted) The Goal is to get her to start to relax under her owner and family member's touch.
- Sit with Interim Correction 20 minutes (although if you reach your goal it should start to take 10 minutes or less, maybe start food reward for each time she sits) Goal: To get your dog to start to sit on the verbal cue. Once you can get 3 sessions of 4 in a row just on verbal cue, you then do not need to do the entire 20 minutes. So your goal is to be able to have your dog sit with the verbal cue for 3 sets of 4 in a row. Week 3: No real change unless she starts meeting the goal.
- Still Sit Stays 15 Minutes at first while building (then when she can do 1 minute 8+ minutes) Goal: To be able to easily do 4 in a row for one minute. Remember to build it up from an easy time first (like 15 or 30 seconds) and then once you can get 4 in a row at that time, then add 10 to 15 seconds to the time (you could even add just 5 seconds to the time). Once you get to about 45 seconds or a minute, you can stop once you just get 4 in a row. Goal: To get your dog to step on themselves for times in a row for 3 sets.(NOTE THIS VIDEO WAS TAKEN ON DAY 1 OF THIS, I BELIEVE).
- Send to Place (or go to bed) 5 plus minutes Goal: To get your dog to step on themselves for times in a row for 3 sets. Week 3: No real change, just be sure you are both meeting the goal of her stepping onto the place herself. Don't send her from too far away just now.
- Circle Place 5 plus minutes Goal: To be able to perform 4 circle places in a row for one minute. Week 3: This exercise changed by dropping the leash and creating more distractions. Outide could be the additional distraction, also metal clanging (like we did in the lesson), banging pots, and so on. Don't forget that noise files for dog training can be found on YouTube.
